THE HAUNTED NIGHT
The juicy stem from a thick vine exploded sending shrapnel onto her face and neck. Instinctively she knows not to touch her face or the poison will only spread to her hands. Fear increases incrementally with the surge of the wind wrapping itself like a tongue around the pine trees. She closes her eyes to the searing panic as the path winds itself one way and another, up and down, each one into a deeper, darker part of the wood.
In The Haunted Night, Isabella’s worst nightmare plays out behind her closed and twitching eyelids as she finds herself in a dark wood where poisonous plants are not the only thing throttling trees to death.
Not milk teeth. Adult only teeth. He opens his hand to count them. Teeth have bitten into his skin without his mouth moving. The marks left behind have formed a word. What is it? He frowns, scrutinising the letters. One molar, two canines and five incisors. It spells something. It spells AILMENT.
In The Ailment, A man’s worst nightmare plays out behind his closed and twitching eyelids as sexual conquest gets revenge for one painful, horrible night.
THE HAUNTED NIGHTCLUB
The ghosts of old boyfriends move slowly in a parody of dancing. She blinks at the white flashing lights suffused with a sickly red from the blood of broken hearts, and with a trembling hand, wipes away the stain of unfaithful kisses and wet, probing tongues.
In The Haunted Nightclub, Esme’s worst nightmare plays out behind her closed and twitching eyelids as the men Esme betrayed – and the ones who betrayed her – visit her for one pulsing night.
THE DOLL’S HOUSE
She knows Alice drank a shrinking potion, and she knows the Lilliputians could be squashed under a shoe. Is she in a children’s story? Is this child’s -play? What is this dainty house she finds herself in? Clarissa’s mouth drops open as she recognises the quaint table and chairs in the yellow kitchen, and the gingham curtains at the window – and the hand on its way to grab her.
In The Dolls House, Clarissa’s worst nightmare plays out behind her closed and twitching eyelids as the little sister she envied and stole from visits her for one playful night.
THE HAUNTED FAIRGROUND
Round and round the maiden goes, until she goes to someplace nobody knows…
In The Haunted Fairground, Antonia’s worst nightmare plays out behind her closed and twitching eyelids as a horse on the carousel comes to life and carries her to a surreal landscape for one fair night.
THE FASHION SHOW
There are some people who would rather be dead than invisible. People will stop at nothing to turn a head, to be the topic of conversation, a lingering image in someone’s memory, photographed for a glossy magazine doing ordinary things like shopping, sipping an Expresso, simply crossing the road. It’s their raison d’êtr. To be seen. Remembered. Not for doing good or remarkable things. No, for the clothes and shoes they wear.
In The Fashion Show, someone’s worst nightmare plays out behind their closed and twitching eyelids as they find themselves on the catwalk for one ugly night.
THE HAUNTED FARM
An old bark. A twisted purr, and the long bleat of a lonely sheep calling for her lamb echoes through the night. Her uncle had the reputation of a successful farmer, so why did the place smell of death? Between the cracks in the windows and the loose roof tiles of the barn, the whispering dead splutter.
In The Haunted Farm, Christabel’s worst nightmare plays out behind her closed and twitching eyelids as the sounds and smells of the farm metamorphose her into a farm animal for one torturous night.
